This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but within Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The story begins when the couple move from the big city to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
