Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these drugs should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something activating and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
