Our Premier Release of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Top Position.

On the surface, this work could seem closer to a challenging university examination rather than the latest popular music record from an artist whose previous single was a collaboration with a global pop icon. Divided into four different parts and performed in thirteen tongues, we have a dizzying classical-tinged opus exploring feminine mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal change, often by way of the prism of different saintly figures. The end of a relationship—a topic treated with grounded openness elsewhere—soars skyward here, supported by the lush presence of a full orchestra and input from an award-winning composer within a vast roll call of collaborators. The pure daring by itself makes the efforts of other artists look quite modest.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

The fact that this album succeeds in escape dry intellectual chin-stroking is nothing short of miraculous, with full credit going to the artist. Although this is not her first project to blend the past with modern styles, its stakes feel far higher on Lux, and the balancing act more precarious. The element that truly elevates her fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, rich compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be a core sense of playfulness. Similar to the legendary Björk during her height, you find a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls the listener up in its whirlwind. Even when she's breaking your heart in two, the listener still want to stay alongside her through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant energy comes forth brightly during a stunning Italian ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool for several minutes. Suddenly, everything drops silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh and a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral surge crashes in like comedic impact. The track immediately shifts to the wild track featuring racing strings, a powerful choral group, and a surprise role from the artist Björk.

"The charm with Lux lies in you never exactly know—nor want to predict—what you will go next."

Nearly each track ends in a totally distinct point from how it started. One moment examines the transient nature of fame over a delicate orchestration only to disintegrating in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls the artist's earlier rhythmic work starts off moody and brooding, featuring prowling beats, before sudden flamenco handclaps and an angelic choir enter to soften its jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment and Pop

A key balancing act of Lux involves straddling the gap between bold innovation and mainstream appeal. It is little surprise that the album has become the artist's highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of key markets: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy hits. One track performed primarily in the English language swells around a refrain that feels to gather more and more nagging melodies while it spins upward. That trick gets repeated on another expansive track that expands and contracts, weaving multiple tunes like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its playful, theatrical flair and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns with cultural impact of contemporary breakup songs, lambasting a former partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the singing carry a sharp smile, akin to a fairy-tale figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux is popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious reach for capital-A Art in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of sublime elevation, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully controls its built-in excess. This is a deep source of buried gems that takes patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like a chore. While some big releases of the year seemed like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous banquet where the guests around the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred wine, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the profound feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common gossip about useless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly restlessly inventive practitioner.
