Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
