EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
